Usk Castle Inner Ward

The inner ward was enclosed in the early 13th century with a curtain wall of sandstone rubble. The plan form of this new enclosure was roughly rectangular in shape but strictly octagonal with round towers at its cardinal points apart from the western tower - the 12th century rectangular Keep.

The entrance to the inner ward was through a pointed arch in the thickness of the curtain wall and directly opposite the Garrison Tower of the same period.

A 14th century half round tower protected the approach to the entrance but little visible remains of this tower.

The north west and south west angles remained open to the field until a rectangular tower was added in the 14th century.

The 13th century south west Garrison tower is well preserved and has some fine and interesting architectural detailing.
