The Great Hall was completed by Matilda, widow of Gilbert de Clare (who died at Bannockburn in 1314).
During the tenure of Elizabeth de Burgh, a formidable lady who spent most of her 70 years at her castles of Clare (Suffolk) and Usk, the Castle became a more comfortable place to live, with the addition of its new Solar and Chamber Towers. Access to both these and the Chapel can be seen inside the Hall, as can a Tudor fireplace at the upper floor level.
There is an astonishing record of the Christmas feast she gave in 1327 which can be seen Here!
